Surrounded by her family, Mary passed away at Jessica’s House Residential Hospice in Exeter on January 7, 2021 at the age of 74 after a brief illness. Beloved wife of Scott Burton. Adored mother of Michelle Ellison (Eric), Marcie Ellison Outerbridge (Howie), and Jenny Ellison (Duncan), stepmother of Mark Burton (Debbie), Jeff Burton (Liette) and Mike Burton (Julia). Dear grandmother of Beckett, Sasha, Avery, Piper, Sebastian, Charlie, Jesse and Brette. Fondly remembered by her many cousins. Predeceased by her parents Wilma and Charlie Merryfield. Mary grew up in Monkton, Ontario, above her parents’ general store. At Mitchell District High School she was a cheerleader who excelled at Latin and German. She attended Stratford Teachers College, and was a popular teacher for elementary students in the region. She was a fun and devoted mother and dedicated her last 15 years to her eight grandchildren near and far, delighting in their different personalities. She remained youthful in her style, and loved theatre, music, crafting and dancing. With Scott, she cut a fine form on the dance floor. They also shared a love of crosswords, trivia, Jeopardy, golf and bobbing in the swimming pool. Mary had a great laugh and was fascinated by everyone she met. She placed a high value on community, and cultivated countless friendships in Monkton, Exeter and her winter home in Ocala, Florida.
When COVID restrictions are lifted, a celebration befitting Mary’s love of family, friends and music will be held in Exeter. A private family funeral service will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, Exeter on Wednesday, January 13th. Cremation has taken place.
Donations to Jessica’s House or the South Huron Hospital Foundation, where Mary passed her last weeks in comfort, are welcome.

What a tragic loss, losing your mother is never easy. Just remember the good times and there were plenty of them on Pryde Blvd and Kingscourt Cres. She was a cheerleader in High School, however; she keep that tradition going for all us kids in the neighbourhood. Many many many practice laps in your swimming pool for the Exeter Swim Team years ago among countless other activities, gatherings and sports. Always a infectious smile and a warm welcome no matter where you would meet her. RIP Mary it is well deserved. The neighbourhood “Kids” will miss you !!
