Alice M. Thiel passed away peacefully in her home in Zurich on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 in her 106th year. She was the beloved wife of the late Earl Thiel (1961). Alice was one of five children of Clara (Rader) and John Decher of Zurich and was a lifelong member of the Zurich community. Cherished mother of Carole and the late Don Kyle (2003) of Chilliwack B.C., Allan and Gail Thiel of Armstrong B.C., and Doug and Lois of Grand Bend, ON. She was the proud “grandma” of Scott and Carol Lee Kyle of Bedford N.S., Deborah Kyle of Bellman N.S., Tanya Weibe and Tovi Thiel of McBride B.C., David Thiel and Claire Macarandang of Toronto, and Dan Thiel and Sombra Fernandez of Brampton. Predeceased by infant granddaughter Jennifer Thiel (Mar. 15, 1971). Alice was very much loved by all of her great-grandchildren Guylaine, Jenna, Reid, Justin, Branton, Hailey, Gunner, Luna, Isabel, and Willa. Fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends who have known her and visited with her over the years. She had a very close bond with her godson Hubert “Hub” Thiel of Zurich.
One of her first jobs was working at the Dominion Hotel in Zurich. She worked with her husband for years in the office of Thiel Transport until its sale in 1958. She began driving the RR 2 Zurich mail route after the passing of her husband and retired in 1982. She has been honoured and celebrated over the years by local groups and politicians for her contributions to the community. She will be missed by her many friends and neighbours who supported her independence in her own home. She will be remembered by her church community and by all of us who loved her.
Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 49 Goshen Street North, ZURICH on Sunday afternoon from 1 – 4 PM. Registration is required and appreciated. Please click “Register Now” below to register.

Doug & Lois, Carole, Allan & Gail & families, Hub & Bev & Alice’s vast array of friends;
Our sincere sympathy in the loss of my dear “Great Aunt Alice”. I have many, many fond memories of visits and times with Aunt Alice over the years. She certainly was a lively and feisty one right up to recently! She called me just before Christmas and we had a really good chat. I am very happy I was able to participate in her 100th, 103rd and 105th. What a wonderful feat to live as full a life as she has lived! While she will be missed by us all, we must simply celebrate her life.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with you all at this time.

Heartfelt sympathy on the passing of Alice, a truly amazing lady. Susan and I always considered it an honour and a privilege to have Alice in our lives; someone we could affectionately call our friend. Alice routinely called to check on Susan, when she was ill, and since Susan’s passing has called to check on me! A truly remarkable lady who touched so many people, in so many ways. I will miss Alice, but will have fond memories to cherish. Rest In Peace Alice

Dear Alice Thiel Family, our thoughts and condolences to each of you. Alice was blessed with good health and longevity, a gift which she used in the very best way. To Doug, Lois and the rest of the Thiel family,
What a lady Grandma Alice was…between her bear hugs, thoughtful birthday cards to Sebastian who shared the same birthday month only days apart, celebrating her birthday dinners at Hessenland where we took our picture with Grandma Alice and received “said” bear hugs and being teased from Frank and his comrads- she took everything in stride! We even recall her calling the Inn one random day looking for a golden bracelet she thought may have been lost at Hessenland which we actually found in the parking lot a couple of months earlier. We held on to this bracelet because it looked precious with quite a few “years” behind it. When she heard we had it, her voice trembled with relief and proceeded to tell me it was a gift that was given to her when she was a flower girl for a relative…at 105 years of age you can only imagine how old this bracelet was. So many more stories we can share that springs a smile or a chuckle…Grandma Alice…you’re one for the books- may you rest in peace knowing you have left your mark not only in the heart of Zurich but in ours.
Christa, Frank, Liz, Sebastian, Eric, Lauren, Frankie, Harriet and the rest of the Hessenland Team

Dear Doug, Lois and the Thiel Family,
From the first time we met Grandma Alice, she looked like the quintessential little old lady. Then we shook her hand and gave her a hug and we knew we’ve met someone special. She may have been tiny but she was strong and mighty. Plus, she always had a smile on her face!
She had such a sharp mind and her memory was long. She remembered names, places and events like it just happened yesterday.
We will never forget the times we spent with her. We will treasure our visits with her in her ‘extended living room’ where we enjoyed listening to her stories of when she was growing up and how things have changed.
Grandma Alice lived life to the fullest on her own terms.
We are so fortunate to have known and spent time with her. She will be missed.
We love you Grandma Alice! Rest in peace. xoxo

Grandma Alice was truly a wonderful, kind person, full of strength and meant so much to us. She was very independent. She always had so many stories to tell, very sharp memories and always appreciated little things in life. We are fortunate to get to know Grandma Alice.
In the summer, we enjoyed our visits at her “living room” garage and were happy spending time with her on her 105th birthday in September.
We will miss her and our phone calls with her. We thank Grandma Alice for sharing some of life’s wisdom.
May Grandma Alice rest in peace.
Love, Clarissa & Guy

When talking to Alice on the phone a few weeks ago it was evident Alice was still in the game of life. She continued to reach out to so many people. The recent construction around her house was a small distraction as she continued to live her life to the fullest.
Her secret to such a long life appeared to be have fun, be kind , and embrace life.
Thanks Alice for being a good example, you set the bar high. You did it your way.
Larry Mcclinchey
We wish to extend our sincere condolences to Doug, Lois and all the Thiel family.

Dear Doug and Lois and family Alice was one great lady and will be missed very much by the community. I was just thinking of her the other as I was passing by and had hoped to stop by again to have one of those great chats with her. She had invited me to stop by for year to pick red currants which she knew I enjoyed. I had also had the pleasure of doing her hair for a number of years.

To Aunt Alice’s Family,
What a remarkable woman we have lost! She was always full of stories and historic information. Her memory was absolutely unbelievable for her age. We enjoyed our last visit with her on her birthday weekend and she was clearly loving seeing everyone who stopped by. Phil well remembers meeting her at the mail box when he was a kid and she always had time to talk to him. When a group of us from church stopped in to sing some carols the week before Christmas, she was delighted and even sang along. Aunt Alice will certainly be missed in our family and in the community!
Love,

To Alice’s family…
We send our deepest sympathy on the loss of your loved one. We were very saddened to hear this news. She was a remarkable and gracious woman.
Bill, especially, enjoyed many visits with Alice over the years including those in the garage during Covid. She was set up there with chairs, her newspaper, and some produce from her garden or freezer to offer us in exchange for the zucchini bread or cookies we took, which she appreciated. She was full of gratitude always.
In organizing our own family photos or stories, we always set aside photos of people we didn’t know or questions we needed to ask so Alice could help us – and she always could.
She was related to Bill through the Raders and was an invaluable source of family history, who will be sorely missed.
May Alice’s memory be a blessing to you all.
Rest in peace, dear Alice.

I will always remember our phone calls that we would have after my retirement from the bank. We would talk for at least an hour just catching up on all the local news and I would listen to her stories of her growing up years. Always a pleasure to listen to. Know that our thoughts and prayers will be with you during this difficult time.
A life well lived…. RIP dear Alice.💕🙏🏻
