Kirk, your father stood up at my parents’ wedding in August of 1957. My dad was principal in St Marys at the time (elementary, junior), later teaching at the high school. I am sure my dad and your mom knew each other well. He passed in 2009, but my mom, Betty Johnson, is 94 now…still smiling, but missing many friends. May the knowledge that the burden is shared by many help lessen the feeling of loss just a little bit. Blessings, Andrew Johnson & family, son of Betty and the late Len Johnson, formerly of St Marys.

Wonderful memories of a truly gentle and caring teacher from my days at North Ward. She had a true interest in her students with a kind word and with the other teachers made for a great grade school experience. In the years since i was pleased to know Mary through my ventures to Kirkton and in my working life. A true lady always with a smile. May memories bring you peace and comfort in the time ahead. Gary Mallalieu, Cynthia ( Copeland ) and family.

Sixty years ago Mary Blackler was my Grade Four teacher at St. Marys Central School. With little notice she took over the class at Christmas after the unexpected departure of our former teacher. She was clear-headed, well-organized, and warm hearted — a very model of her profession. I’ll never forget the day when Edith McArthur our music teacher asked her to sing “My Wild Irish Rose”: Mary was seated in a chair at the back of the music room and without moving her marking or standing up she sang it through. She had a beautiful voice and everyone in the room was surprised and thrilled to hear her sing. What happy memories!
