HODSON: Arthur David “Dave” of Bayfield formerly of Stratford

Died peacefully after a brief illness at the Seaforth Long Term Care Home on February 3, 2021 at the age 79. Loving husband of Donna (Agroff) for 59 years. Survived by his mother Mary Hodson of St. Mary’s. Loving father of Susanne (Tony), Peter, Stephen (Jill), and Elicia (Susan). Will be missed by his grandchildren Matthew, Sydney, Levi, Tyson, and Ella and his great grandchildren Jon, Zack, and Ben.

Dave worked as a newspaper printer, had a second career as a mechanic for many years, and enjoyed farming on Pork Road in Stratford. Dave won many trophies, ice car racing, on the lakes around Peterborough and Barrie.

Cremation has taken place; a celebration of Dave’s life will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Haskett Funeral Home, Seaforth (519-527-1390).

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Stratford House of Blessing (Food Bank) would be appreciated by the family.

Memories from Susanne:

On February 3rd, 2021, we lost a husband and my father, David Hodson from COVID. He passed peacefully during the early hours of the morning. We all had the chance to say our good bye’s via phone and Facetime. It’s a small blessing as he won’t have to suffer with his dementia any longer though it doesn’t it make it any easier to let him go.
He often regaled us with stories of where he had been and where he had taken my mom out for dinner. Of course, none of these had taken place outside of his mind. Funny, how the mind works in dementia. He loved my mom and it was fortunate that they were both in the same home, my dad in long term care and my mom in retirement. Though this damn COVID prevented visits for the last while.
 
My dad often would be displaced and not know where he was. I would do the rational thinking and try and get him to see if he could see his bed, his nightside table etc…and no, Dad, you couldn’t be anywhere else than where he was. He would say, “Get me Tony.” Tony says, “Popsy, I put a tracker on your wheelchair when we took you for a walk last week, remember? I know exactly where you are. I will send someone to pick you up.”
I was a little frustrated, saying now my dad is going to be upset waiting for someone to come get him and no one is coming. Nope, Tony knew better.
The next day, my dad says, ” I don’t know what the guy’s name you sent to pick me up, but wow was he strong. He threw me over his shoulder, threw my wheelchair in the truck and put me back into my bed.” It’s memories like these that bring a smile to our faces and remember that even in sadness, there is light.
 
He was a strict ruler with a heavy hand but he gave the best hugs, made the best farmer fried eggs and stews. And I bet all the grandchildren remember his whisker rubs, we used to get them all the time as kids too. He shall be missed!
He has been cremated and when restrictions lift, we will hold a celebration of life. Trust me there will be cake, as my dad loved cake with his coffee.

    My heartfelt condolences on the loss of your husband, father, and grand and great grandfather. He was such an important part of our families trips to Stratford, our growing up years. . He could be such a goof-ball at times.
    My mom, Catharine Hodges always considered him to be her “little brother” even though he towered over her. Dementia is a terrible, terrible thing to suffer from. He is now at peace, and his mind at rest.
