With the love of her family in her heart, Greta Myrtle (née Smith) Hoegy, passed away at Listowel Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, December 4, 2019. In her 93 years among us Greta was a source of love and caring in the circle of her family and friends. She was a petite woman who lived life with a large sense of determination and stamina. Greta and Lavern were partners in life, blessed with 66 years of marriage, farming and raising their family together. In faith, we trust they are now reunited again in eternal life. Greta was a dedicated member of the Ladies Orange Benevolent Association.
Greta will be lovingly remembered by her children Brenda and Jim Nicholson, Wayne and Linda Hoegy, Yvonne and Bryan Coultes, Maureen and Gary Friedman, Douglas and Mary Dianne Hoegy and Lyle and Mary Hoegy. Cherishing memories of a much loved grandmother are 19 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Left to reminisce days gone by are sister-in-law Leotta MacKenzie and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her husband Lavern (2015), Greta is predeceased by siblings Amos Smith, Ormal Smith, Lyla Smith, Lillian and Lester Green and siblings-in-law Wilber and Norma Hoegy, Evelyn and Gordon Kleber and Edwin MacKenzie.
Honouring Greta’s wishes cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Haskett Funeral Home, 87 Goderich Street West, Seaforth on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, from 9:45-10:45 a.m. followed by a memorial service commencing at 11a.m. A reception will follow at Branch 156, Seaforth Legion, 123 Main Street South, Seaforth. Interment will take place in McKillop Cemetery at a later date.
As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to McKillop Cemetery, Cavan United Church or Listowel Memorial Hospital would be appreciated by the family.

To all of Greta’s kids …Today I dropped in to visit Bill & Sharon….and Sharon told me this sad news. I’m very sorry to hear your mom has passed. Our parents go way back. Lots of pictures in moms collection taken on the Hoegy farm. Mom always spoke fondly of Laverne & Greta.
I regret I didn’t make it to your moms service to see each one of you.

We are sorry to hear of the passing of this wonderful lady. My daughter, Stefani & my husband, Ron & I had fun on occasion playing cards with both Greta & Lavern BUT not a patch on the fun that mom & dad: Frank & Olly Ward had over the years visiting back & forth & playing cards with Greta & Lavern! Jim,Brenda and family. We were saddened to hear the death of Greta,.
We first met your Mom and Dad in Florida when we stayed at Franks apartment . They had the same ritual every night playing cards .And going to the Flee Market on Saturday. They treated us very well and of course Earl loved playing cards against Greta. She took her cards serious and Earl took his really serious so lots of teasing amongst those two..
I know she hasn’t been well but Brenda you will miss your Mom .
Sincere sympathy to all.

Aunt Greta has left us with many fond memories. Yes, she was petit but oh so mighty.
Her quiet voice held authority as Uncle Laverne would attest to as well as the rest of us.
When playing cards you soon found out that when the card was laid It was Played.
She was so very proud of her family and loved nothing more than to share photo albums of all the special pictures when you visited.
She will certainly be missed but never forgotten
