Peacefully, at London Health Sciences Centre – Victoria Hospital on Friday, February 19th, 2016 of Zurich, Ontario and Victoria, British Columbia in his 86th year. Hello Donna and Family:
I’m so pleased that my sister Carol “Klopp” Vaile expresssed her sympathies earlier today.
Also her precious comments re: your family.
I personally have very fond memories of our having met you several times in Victoria.
I want to wish you the very best moving forward and when you are alone and conversing with Herb – please tell him how much I believed he was a “good man”.
Most Sincerely,
Dave McMillan (now back in London to be near the majority of my children).
Carol Vaile
Sincere Condolences Donna, Doug, and family. Herb was a special thoughtful caring person, an absolute joy to know. He will not be forgotten & will hold particular special memories for me. My love, with blessings for strength & happiness in the years ahead. Carol

Donna, just talking with you’s at church. Sorry to hear about Herb, remembering the times when he was with co-operators and after bowling at your place for our get togethers with the team. So many wonderful memories. May the cherished memories of the one you hold dear, comfort and
sustain you till a brighter day is near.
Steve Nielsen
Dear Donna and Family,
We, like all of your friends, were deeply saddened to learn of Herb’s passing. Herb was a very fine man who took an interest in everyone he met, had a prodigious memory and was an encyclopedia of knowledge on life and especially farming.
He was a good friend to many of us and will be remembered and missed.
Sandra and Steve Nielsen
Eileen and Jack Dressler
To my dear Donna and cherished family, we are so saddened to hear of my special friend, Herbie Berbie’s, passing. There are so many memories and special times we have spent together over the years, but none greater when we were playing solo and Herbie would look like he was sleeping on the couch, but suddenly hear us say something and comment. And we would say, “I thought you were sleeping,” and he would say, “nope, just resting.” A smart man, that husband and father of yours, whom I just cherished to play solo with. We were so sorry to not to be able to be with you at the funeral and celebrate his life with you, but I know his love, joy and vibrancy will continue to live on with you all, in your hearts and memories that never die. We are down here in Florida when we sadly got the news, otherwise we would have never missed to be with you and the family. We give thanks for his gift of life and for his and your friendship that met with us in Zurich many years ago, at a time when we really needed it. For that we will always treasure in our hearts. May God continue to bind your wounds of pain and loss but lift them up with his heavenly promise of another time when we will all be together. We promise to see you when we get up that way again and properly share our love and hearts with you. Peace and love, Eileen and Jack.

I have so many memories of growing up in Zurich with many of them centered around the Klopp family. Going to school with “the twins”, sleepovers with Linda which included being part of large family dinners and a “chat” with Herb, church functions, Girl Guides and eventually a special friendship with Diane which resulted in her being maid of honour at my wedding. Both Herb and Donna were always very big hearted and welcoming.
Please accept our sincere sympathies at this time. I know you will have lots of great memories to help you through.

Barb and I were saddened to hear of Herb’s passing. Herb was a formative influence in my early years – when my parents would drop city-slickers Joel and I off at the farm for a week of not-so-hard-labour. Herb taught us how to get our hands dirty – literally – as we weeded endless rows of beans. But more importantly he set a great example of how to live a full and balanced life -of work, play, big family dinners, church, community – and long political discussions! His partnership with Donna was an awesome thing to behold – two strong, independent, energetic people working together to raise an amazing family – and find time to also take care of a couple of obnoxious free-loaders from the city. My deepest condolences to you, Donna, and your children for your loss.

Our deepest sympathy to the Klopp family. I can remember being so warmly welcomed to Canada as a new bride in 1970, and the many wonderful get-togethers at the Klopp farm that followed. Then your children baby-sat my children, continuing the special memories to this day.
Herb was a hard-working farmer and a thoughtful philosopher, who gave generously of his time and talents to his church, his friends and his community. He was a strong, wise and gentle giant of a man, the much-loved Patriarch of his family, and the beloved companion and soul-mate of his precious wife, Donna.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Our thoughts are with all of you since the death of your beloved husband, Father & Grandfather.
Herb was an icon; not only to his family & friends, but to his community & anyone privileged enough to have known him.
We have many special memories over the years spent with Herb & his family. At Halloween , our children always eagerly anticipated going to the Klopps’ ; their stop always saved til last- for the best treats.
Herb had the unique ability to make anyone he spoke with feel special: he gave you his undivided attention, & always wanted to know about you & your family. His wit was sharp, and his memory amazing!
We will cherish many treasured memories of times spent with him.
It was an honour to have had his presence in the lives of our family.

To the whole Klopp clan. Wishing I could be there in person to help remember the wonderful life and person of Herb. I will miss him asking me each time we met if I knew another family in Perth County (we had a standing joke about me being from the wrong county!!), if I was connected to such and such a family, and his sharing of my family’s history on the farm and area (there will always be memories of a very special drive we took together!!). His welcoming spirit always made you feel like family. Hugs.

Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to all who are grieving the loss of Herbert at this time. It’s hard to know what to say at times like this, but please find comfort in what it says at John 5:28 & 29, and that for now, it’s just like your loved one is “sleeping.” Also be comforted by knowing that soon the earth will be a place where death will be a thing of the past as Revelation 21:4 promises, and our loved ones will be healthy and happy again. Till that time, it’s hoped that these few sincere words help you through the days ahead. Take care.

Thanks to technology, I heard the sad news of Herb’s death on Face Book while living in Thailand and will now offer condolences to the entire Klopp family— to Donna and everyone—by entering a comment or two on this page. I had only mentioned Herb in a comment on FB to Cathy Zimmer Granville a few days ago before hearing of Herb’s death: I contrasted the crooked furrows made by the farmer in his rice field in Thailand to the straight ones remembered on the Klopp farm in Ontario and wondered what Herb’s reaction would have been. The conclusion—I imagined Herb would have gone over to the farmer, had a long chat and soon they would have become the best of friends, possibly with Herb taking over the tractor and showing another way to plough a field. You see, I spent my formative years with Herb and Donna hoeing the bean fields in the summer at a time there was no cell phone music to listen to. The drudgery of the work was borne by talking to Herb as we went up and down the fields, rewarded at the ends with long gulps of currant juice drunk from a large jar. The conversation was aways informative, thoughtful, funny, and connected to what was currently relevant. Were I hoeing beans today with Herb, I’d not be listening to music on a cell phone for that would prevent discussions and listening to the wisdom of a man who had lots to say, a man who was a straight talker, a man who made me think, and a man who influenced me a long time ago. I may be able to trace by politically left of centre bias to those long July days on the bean fields. Who knows? I can say for certain, though, that my wife and I were sad to hear the news of the death of a good man and both of us offer our deepest condolences to Donna and the entire Klopp family.
Jerry and Ruth Zehr
A man like Herb, whose kindness and goodness, are traits to treasure, and will sorely be missed . We have many fond memories, and will hold them dear.

Donna & family,
Sincere condolences to each of you. Although it’s been such a long time, (30 years ago), I fondly remember spending a few minutes with Herb in his office , each time I would drop into the farm ~ kids in tow. I remember he loved the Bismarks I would bring along, and he always had time for a chat. I don’t think I ever saw him without his ready smile or quick laughter. He was a treasure and you will surely miss his love.
