Had the pleasure of working with Marcel over the years and am grateful I got to spend a little time with him before he passed. When I think about Marcel I just think about what a SOLID person he was, character wise. Didn’t know him in a close way but from how I saw it…he was a man of few words, but what he said counted.
My heart goes out to his family and friends at this sudden and tragic loss. We lost a good guy. See you down the line brother.
Condolence From: Brad Mills
I was lucky enough to have met Marcel through work.We had some great times and great memories.

Lil, Jean, and the rest of your family and friends:
I was very happy to be present at the funeral on Saturday, thank-you very much. I also know that this has been a very difficult and trying time for all of you, so I didn’t want to exhaust you with a lengthy visit. I was delighted to spend a few moments with Michelle, as we had spent quite a bit of time together over the course of my friendship with Marcel. I wanted to share the following:
Marcel taught me how to drive (better)…
He taught me to love 80s music, especially the Spoons, and Duran Duran. I still wonder if he attended the same concert I did in Toronto two years ago…
Marcel showed me what it was to be someone’s best friend…
Marcel & I did many things together, including judging a public speaking contest for Lil at her school…
He was always incredibly mature, much more so than I at the time, yet he always reacted to any situation with the joy and wonder of a child, such a wonderful combination…
I could go over & over again with you all of my memories of Marcel, and having been with you this past weekend reminded me of some of the ones I had forgotten… I thank you for that.
He enriched my life over all the time I knew him. I regret that we drifted apart after high school, as there was no real reason for it to happen, no “bad blood” or anything like that, it just happened… If I have learned anything from his passing, it would be to rekindle some of those high school friendships which have “slipped”…
I thank you for his life, and I thank him for enhancing my own.
I wish you comfort and peace.
Wes

I hardley know how to begin, Marcel was such an vital and generous person. Generous with his intelligence, with his good humor and his love of life. I feel privleged to have been able to work with him over the last few years. He made such a difference to me on two very difficult shows. His humor never failed to difuse situations. His respect for his fellow workers, made for a charmed and inclusive work space, a rare commodity on a film set. His honesty, and direct approach to problems won him many fans from drivers to laborers to production designers and producers. I will miss him, we all will. I wanted to say that he and your family have been in my thoughts and prayers since Tuesday.

To all who have sent in messages of condolences and/or tributes. I am at awe. John and I knew how great Mars was, but,he’s our son……..he’s supposed to be great and every parent thinks their child is super. As I read all the messages, I’m at an absolute loss and totatly unaware as to effect HE had on so many people. John and I look forward to reading all the tributes, because with each one we read, we learn something new about our son, and our heart just does a sommersault. Everytime I look at his picture, his smile seem to grow wider and it’s all because of you who send in your tributes. Thank you so much for giving us a greater insight to the “the man, the legend”. Thank You. John and Lil

My deepest and sincere thoughts go out to the Laporte family. I am in shock of the sudden passing of Marcel. I’ve worked with Marcel on various film sets the most recent, JUMPER. On my way to the studio, I’d pass through the construction shop and was always greeted with a cheery, wide-eyed, smiling face and at the top of his voice, he would exclaim- GOOD MORNING! When I walk through that construction shop again, I will smile and say, ’’and a good morning to you Marcel’’.
Condolence From: Harv Vincent

Marcel was a Gentleman,a Professional,a Creative-‘cut-to-the chase’-Problem-Solver who treated everyone the way he liked to be treated : with Respect and Dignity and always with the finest-Modicum of Decorum…A true-‘ “Kuschty-Rye” ‘(Gypsy-Sanscrit for: ‘Fine-Young-Gentleman’ who would always smile at the start or end of a day..when I would refer to him that way.I am Sincerely-Saddened by his Passing !

To the Laporte family, I am very sorry for your loss. I cannot begin to express my shock and sadness after hearing of this GREAT MAN’S passing. Marcel was the epitome of a gentleman. Always treated everyone with the respect and consideration that they deserved. I first met Marcel back in ’95, on a show called MRS WINTERBOURNE. I was the shop labourer then. Marcel was always smiling, always funny with that ‘quick as a whip’ wit. I’ve never had as much fun on any show as I did on that one. Marcel made that environment as loose and happy as possible. This man will do the same for Heaven. We’ve lost a great man on earth, but I’m sure he’s making others laugh and smile right now. You’ll be missed buddy.

Why is it the good always go first? Marcel was a hoot to work with and i always tried to get on his crews, when he put the calls out. At least as far as I was concerned he treated me well and was fair about the work environment we had to work in, and the equipment we had to use. from my stand point I would be glad to call him my friend. Heavens gain is most certainly our loss.

We have been overwhelmed and blessed by the amount of love and support that we have received from so many people in the last few days. The amount of Mars’ friends from grade school, high school, college, work and the Yacht Club who have sent online condolences or who have come to pay their respects in person has been amazing. Thank you to everyone (to all our family and friends) for making such a difficult time much more bearable. Mars has touched so many lives and hearing so many stories about him has made our memories that much sweeter. We love you Mars and we will miss you, but you will always be in our hearts!

I was deeply saddened and upset to to learn of Marcel’s passing. It is sad to loose someone so vibrant and full of life. The first time I met Marcel was when I took a call as a labourer on a location. Marcel was in charge and treated me with respect from the time I got there. Later in my career I showed up on set as the key rigging grip and he treated me with the same respect. I learned that is the way he treated everyone with respect and consideration. I will miss joking with him and teasing Jocke together bud! We are all better for knowing him, his smile, sense of humour and advice as a friend and colleague. He will be sadly missed and never replaced. My condolences to his family and god bless

I had the pleasure and honour of working with Marcel on a number of film and television projects. Always, despite the difficult deadlines and long hours, Marcel had a smile on his face, a joke to share, and a warm and caring attitude. Marcel was that wonderful combination of creativity and ingenuity, a hard working individual who always got the job done and done right. He was, truely, a gentleman, a great co-worker, and a fine friend. He will be greatly, greatly missed by the Toronto film community. My heartfelt condolences to all family and friends.

I haven’t seen Marcel since high school, where he was singularly and fearlessly alive. From the other tributes, I see that he continued that way, leaving memorable moments and stories in his path. In one science class, when any experiment was announced, he would inquire energetically “Will it blow up?”. Months after he had dropped that class to devote more time to other activities, the teacher announced “You’d better go get Marcel…”, so he would not miss the the final, explosive chemistry demonstration. His spirit was irresistable, even when he wasn’t there, and I hope this effect of Marcel wll bring comfort to his family even in this time of grief.

It’s so hard to find the words …our deepest sympathy to the family. Please know that we are thinking of all of you at this very sad time. What a wonderful guy;Marcel. I took the time to read all of the other posted condolences before I began typing and it didn’t take me long to realize how many lives Marcel has touched. I attended Central Huron Secondary School with Marcel and worked with him on many drama projects. He was a pro even then! It appears he perfected his craft as life moved on by the content of the messages found here. As I looked through the year books from CHSS, I couldn’t help but smile when I saw pictures of Marcel. It was his smile! Marcel was very involved in the highschool community and spent a great deal of time bettering the school. Marcel had a very positive impact on CHSS all through the years that he was there and beyond. We lost touch after highschool but I bumped into him in Goderich at the gas station a while ago and we had a great chat. He spoke of his daughter and you could tell he was so very proud of her. I hope that Marcel’s family may find comfort from these messages. We’ve all been blessed having known Marcel.

Condolence: To all who new Marcel, It’s been a long time since I last saw Marcel. I had the pleasure of running in to him on a production a few years back. But before that it had also been many years since our days at Frischkorn, then Staging Matrix. A little while ago I had been meaning to get in touch with him to give thanks and let him know what a positive effect he had on me. It seems as you go through life these days that many people are too wrapped up in themselves to take the time to care about somebody else. When I first met Marcel I was a kid just out of college who thought he knew everything, and wasn’t to afraid to let you know that. Then came a time a bit later when working on a production that Marcel showed up to “help out”. I still look back on an evening at the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City as a turning point in my life. We had just enjoyed a great meal with the rest of the crew and were getting ready to leave when Marcel suggested that the two of us stay for a little bit, he had something he wanted to talk to me about. It was then that he informed me that he wasn’t there to help out, he had been called in late in the project when there were doubts about my abilities to handle the scope of the show. I still remember that he took the time to talk to me and let me know where I stood and what I needed to do to change where I was headed (it was a bit of a one-sided conversation). Marcel, to this day I thank you for that, and I’m deeply sorry that I didn’t make the time to tell you how much it meant to me. There seem to come along certain times in your life when you reach a turning point, and I know that was one for me, and unfortunatley when Pete called me with the news about Marcel’s passing on Tuesday, that was another one. You go through your life trying to make a difference, and wondering if you have. Marcel if you’re reading this I just want you to know that you have made a difference. I know that we’re all better off for having known Marcel Laporte.

Although I had only known Marcel through our business relationship I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. When I was a supplier to him for his trade it was always great to hear what he was up to. He left a very strong impression on me of being very positive and having a good sense of humour, two qualities often lacking in people. My best wishes to his friends and family. AB

It is with a heavy heart and a great deal of sorrow that I write to tell you how sorry I am to hear of Marcels passing. I have worked with him often and this year on JUMPER was the set decoration head on every set that Marcel was the construction head. As a result I worked closely with him every day and always started my day off meeting him in the lot at around 6;30 or so, we were the first in and Marcel was always there in a great mood, big smile on his face, making sure everthing was ready for his guys! right down to the coffe which he made sure was perked and waiting. No issue was ever a problem, Marcel always had time to talk to you and try and help. He was talented, organize, professional, friendly and just an all around great guy. I will miss him greatly, as will all who have ever had the good fortune to work with him. I know that if we who only knew him a little will miss him so much, then the hole that his leaving has opened in his families heart must be immeasurable. Please accept my sincerest regrets and know that many are praying for Marcel and his loving family at this time of sorrow. Danielle Fleury set decoration IATSE 873

I can’t find the words to express my sadness ,between the tears and in sharing the stories and fond memories we all have here about Marcel,I just wanted to let you know that our hearts and prays are with you all, I can’t stop thinking about how Marcel used to answer the phone when we lived together, “Marcel LaPorte the Man the Legend, maybe you heard of me” and this one show we were on , Marcel was backstage working and the secret service was there doing a security check, they came up to Marcel and asked him for ID, he promptly responded “I am Marcel LaPorte , where’s your ID ?” they showed Marcel their badges. there are so many wonderful things to remember about him, he will always be a Legend in our hearts

I am truly at a loss to express my shock amd dismay that this could happen, too too soon to such a sweet, loving person like Mars. I will always cherish the humour and little ” Marsism ‘s ” I am reminded of often. Marcel you will be truly missed. My thoughts are with the family, Janet, Taylor and Cheryl.
