Dear: Grandpa,
I started this letter with a heart so heavy. The circumstances, in which I’m writing these words, are not the greatest, because it means we might have to say goodbye…for now. I love you Grandpa. Please always know and, more importantly, feel that my love for you is, and always has been, unwavering. Even in the times that were dark and hard, I’ve always loved my grandpa.
There is somewhat of a silver lining, to these moments of grief though. A certain sweetness, to the bitter ache, where I see and feel the beautiful reel of our time together, and how it was filled with so much laughter…and pie.
Let’s just take a minute and talk about this pie. We both know it wasn’t just any old pie here; it was GRANDMA’S pie, which means each slice was a heaven-like (and slightly coveted) treat, we both enjoyed IMMENSELY! I remember you calling me up on the phone, telling me, “Hurry, Lise! Gramma just took a pie out the oven! I think it’s a good one!” and the excitement I felt by the thought of it…followed by the panic I felt, that you would eat it all before I got there! So on my bike I’d go, and race over to your house to spend the rest of the day with you and Little Gram, outside, in the gardens. Waiting for that pie.
And when days would come, where there would be one piece remaining, between the two of us…a stand-off over who would get the last slice. You always let me win though. ALWAYS. I know it couldn’t have been easy, because that pie was baked by the best homemaker we would ever be privileged to know. Please give her a hug for me and tell her I miss her very much.
There are so many memories I have of our time together, Gramps. It’s so hard to narrow them down, to the best ones, because they were all the best.
Even when your wake-up calls, in the morning, were of you singing (loudly), “Lisa, Lisa, I’ve been thinking, what a cruel world this would be, if all the Lisa’s were unchartered, far between the northern seas.” I can still hear your voice singing it, and occasionally I sing it to my boys, using their names.
I loved your love and appreciation for music and dancing. I remember the Hartman Brothers singing “Brown Eyed Girl” and dancing with you at the Hall, in Zurich. I remember playing “Old Mocking Bird Hill” on the piano, and you knew the words. I remember your singing to any song you knew. You have a great voice, Grandpa, and it’s going to be hard to imagine not hearing it anymore. I will think of you every time I play the piano. I know it was a talent you fostered and cared for, deeply. You are a very musical soul. I will see you, when I look at my husband Brian’s guitar wall. You really thought that was something.
I’m so happy to have talked to you, these last few years, about life, as a grownup. You were able to meet my 3 boys and they were blessed to meet the man who was very important and impactful in their mom’s life. I’m going to miss your laugh, which always resembled a sneaky, child-like snicker, to me. I’ll miss our talks about how Grandma knew how to do so much, and how she was self-taught, and we could never figure out how she became so great at everything she did, so naturally. She had many gifts that you genuinely appreciated.
And, I am so glad you met Elenor too. She is a really great lady, and I’m glad you got to share so many great experiences with her, as well.
I will think about you so very often, Grandpa. When I see an interesting bird. When I’m doing yard work. When I smell freshly sawed wood. When I hear a pleasant song on the radio. When the church bells, nearby, ring out. The chime of a grandfather clock. A deck of cards. A cold beer. A lightweight summer fedora hat. Doing crossword puzzles with my sons and teaching them that you don’t mess the paper up by circling the word, you draw a line through it! The Blue Jays games on TV, and how we would watch them together on that massive tube TV, in the living room, over a bowl of rum and raisin ice cream.
I still chuckle about ending dinners with you, and how if there was anything left on my plate, it was sopped up with a slice of white bread, then came the gravy and ketchup. Always.
Grandpa, I will miss you so. I am so grateful for the last few years, keeping in touch with you and hearing about your adventures. Thank you for always being you and caring.
I am blowing you kisses, and I am catching all of those blown back. “Caught it!”
Take care, with Little Gram, up there. Enjoy the “fanny just a wiggling,” as she whips up all of her treats. We’ll be thinking of you all the time. I’ll play you a tune, here and there, and I know you’ll be listening. I’ll plant something nice, in my garden for you, this spring. I’ll keep the quilt Grandma made, that you gave me on my wedding day, safe and clean and loved.
I’ll keep you in my heart forever.
I love you, Grandpa.
We will see each other again someday, in a stand-off, over that last slice of pie. Until then…enjoy.
Love: Lisa
