Cathy (Cameron) Evanoff
Dearest Nancy & Wayne,
I address this to the two of you since I wanted to say how terrible it must be to lose a son – it’s just too cruel for words. We heard only yesterday from Barb Gravel about Steve’s sudden passing and havng now read all the condolences here, know that you are thankfully surrounded with caring family, friends, love and support. My thoughts and sympathies were with you yesterday as you celebrated his life. We go back a very long way to Chatsworth where I knew the whole McFarlane family well, and although we’ve sadly lost touch, understand that you continue to be a tight, loving, and sincere group of people who will ensure there’s lots of love to help heal everyone at this very difficult time. My heart goes out to you all – Mom, Dad, Sister, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Special Partner & Children. No doubt your lives are all richer from having had this lovely man in your life.
Peace to you all.
Much Love, Cathy & Gord Evanoff (Mississauga)

Dave, Donna, Ryan and Mitchell Dixon
The Dixon family are all saddened by the passing of Steve. We have nothing but fond memories of Steve. He was one of the good ones. Steve always had a smile on his face and was always good for a joke. Many a weekend was spent laughing and drinking around a fire late into the night only to find ourselves playing an early morning round of golf. Steve loved to get every moment out of life! Rest in peace Steve. Please accept our sincere condolences to the entire Pearce family at this difficult time.

Steve was one of the most unique players I ever coached> His natural ability and his heart helped him to win many games with the Express. He also had one of the worst tempers I ever encouHed. But it just showed how much he cared.
I spoke with him in September about his condition and he seemed to be hopeful that his treatments were helping. So, I am surpresed he died so quickly.
He was a good man, a good teammate, a superb athlete and he will be missed by his friends and family.
I am unable to leave the nursing home to attend any services but you can be sure that my heart is there.

Debbie and I are so sorry to hear of Ponch’s passing. I have so many fond memories of Ponch from both working at the Beer Store together or our years together with the Express. Ponch is one of the best pitcher’s the Express ever had, but as good of a pitcher as Ponch was, he was a better teammate. Ponch always brought a positive, happy go lucky attitute to everything he did. Hopefully all of your memories will help get you through this most difficult time. Our deepest condolences.

Wayne, Nancy, Andrea and family,
Ken and I are so sorry to hear of Steve’s premature passing. It always cause a special ache in my heart when I read of a former student’s death. In my “School Years’ Album”, I have just found a photo of Graduation at E.P.S. in 1976 and Steve is in the row of boys with Steve Horn, Arndt Vermaeten, Bill Simmons, etc. and behind girls like Kathy Penhale and Brenda Murray. Steve was always so pleasant and with such a contagious smile! And, of course, I also remember Andrea and also our social contacts with you, Wayne and Nancy. Please accept our deepest condolences. May God keep you all “in the palm of His hand”. Ken & Lois Ottewell, St. Ives, B.C.

To Wayne, Nancy, Andrea, Bobbi and Families,
My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to you and your families at such a sad time.
I was luck enough to know Ponch throughout high school. We played on various sports teams at SHDHS and I was able to see what a tremendous athlete and person that Steve was. I will always remember having to drive Steve into London after a bad round of intermural golf so he could trade his clubs in then having to rush back so we could see some friends band, The Earwigs, play at the Exeter Fall Fair. We made it but we sure pushed the Chevette to the limit.
RIP Ponch. You will be sadly missed.

I spent some time with Steve during our SHDHS days. He was a heck of a guy and a heck of an athlete. We also spent some time catching up a decade or so ago when SHDHS had an all-classes reunion over at the Rec Centre. That was probably 20 years after we had graduated, but it was pretty easy to pick up where we left off, and we had a good conversation. In fact, it seemed pretty easy to do that with almost everyone who was there from our class. I think the SHDHS Class of 1981 was a pretty good group. Anyhow, I’m glad I got to know Steve when we first met 35 years or so ago, and I’m glad I got to renew acquaintances again a decade ago. His family and all he loved and all who loved him will be in my thoughts and prayers. A good man has left us and our world is a little emptier today as a result. RIP Ponch.
