Peacefully, surrounded by his family at the South Huron Hospital, Exeter on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at the age of 93. Long-time resident of Bayfield and formerly of Zurich and Grand Bend. Loving husband of Moira (Doyle) Wallace for almost 70 years. Beloved father of Andrew Wallace (Taehyun Ahn) of Toronto, and Deirdre Denholm (Gregg) of Michigan. Proud grandfather of Graeme Wallace (Rizaline) of Toronto and Julia Wallace (Matthew Schichter) of Toronto and great-grandfather of his namesake, Charles James Wallace. Fondly remembered by many cousins, nieces and nephews around the world. Predeceased by his parents James and Jean (McCallum) Wallace, and his sister Elisabeth Baur.
Born November 3, 1929, on an army base in Sialkot, then British-occupied India, he spent his early childhood in Burma (now Myanmar). This was sadly interrupted by the outbreak of war which saw Charles and Elisabeth moved to the safety and care of their maternal grandparents (“Grits and Grumps” McCallum) in Ardrishaig, Scotland. Here they would learn in 1943 of the tragic death of their father, James, a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Indian Army, in the defense of the Burma Road.
Charles completed his medical training at Guy’s Hospital, London during the 1950s, where he was active in the boxing club, receiving more than a few black eyes. He was also active in the local London jazz scene and became a competent clarinetist. There he met Moira and many of his life-long friends. He did well as a student and won a prize for cardiology. He was convinced that it was important to thoroughly examine patients, as that was the best way to learn. He was certainly gifted at diagnosis.
After beginning his medical career in Cardiff, Wales, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1961 on a three year commission and was stationed in Centralia. At the end of his service period, he was approached by a delegation from the local village of Zurich who asked if he would consider working there. He thought it over and decided to give it a try, and the rest is history. Charles served the medical needs of the local community for the next 50-odd years, earning their love and respect. Notable was his work to establish the Bluewater Rest Home in Zurich, of which he was the first Chairman (and a later resident) and becoming one of the first doctors in Ontario to employ a nurse practitioner, Margaret (Maggie) Visscher.
Charles was grateful to the community for the wonderful send-off he received following his retirement in 2014.
Friends are invited to gather at the Coach House at Hessenland Inn, 72981 Bluewater Highway, Zurich on Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 1-5 PM. To RSVP please send an email to drwallacememorial@gmail.com. A private family interment will be held at the Bayfield Cemetery.
Donations in his memory may be directed to the Bluewater Rest Home Zurich, or Covenant House. Haskett Funeral Home, ZURICH entrusted with arrangements.

Moira and family,
My sincere condolences on the passing of Dr. Wallace. I enjoyed our chats when doing rounds with him at Queensway. I admired his dedication to his patients. On a visit to his office in Zurich when I was 6 or 7 years old, which would be 60 years ago, I came home with a “free kitten” that I could pick from a box on your front porch. I named her Ginger and she lived a long life on the farm. May he Rest in Peace.

Dear Family and Friends of Dr. Wallace,
While I never had the honour of meeting Dr. Wallace, I certainly knew of him through my father, Dr. Don Ecker, who practiced in Exeter. My father admired Dr. Wallace and his dedication to his patients and the home, and I think may have influenced my father to also hire a nurse practitioner in his office (Mrs. Barb Sharpe, an amazing women herself). My condolences to the family and such a wonderful legacy that he has left and hopefully a role model for many for his dedication in the medical field.

Moira & Family, Maggie, and all Dr. Wallace’s many colleagues, staff & friends;
My sincere condolences to you all in the passing of “our” dear Dr. Wallace. I was very blessed to have him as my doctor for 40 years of my life, from ages 10-50! I always appreciated his care as a youngster but really enjoyed getting to know him as an adult. We had some great chats about many different topics over the years. He always found a way to inject his unique humour into everything. Dr. Wallace was truly one of the most dedicated, caring professionals I’ve ever met. He was still doing house-calls when they were otherwise a thing of the past! My family has always been grateful for his excellent service. However, we were extra grateful knowing he diagnosed my late father (Ron) with what was likely to be a fatal condition, had it not been diagnosed when it was. Dad’s surgeon made a point of telling Mom & Dad to give a big thank you to Dr. Wallace as the condition was difficult to spot and very often did not get diagnosed until it was too late! We had Dad for many happy, healthy years after that!
I was happy to attend Dr. Wallace’s retirement party to witness the well deserved appreciation that so many people had for him and always will.
Dr. Wallace/Charles: “Thank you so much for your care, compassion and friendship over the years. You had a full, meaningful life and touched a lot of people…..in more ways than one!!! (I just know you’ll appreciate that humour!) Rest in peace Doc. “

My sincere sympathy to you and your families in the loss of our most highly respected physician and friend. Dr Wallace and Maggie were a proficient team handling a full office, making house calls and never refusing an urgent call for an appointment. Their heavy load allowed little personal time. He always said his golfing time was 6:00 a.m.
Dr Wallace was our devoted family physician for five generations. Starting with my grandmother in the early 60’s, my parents, delivered my 3 kids (one at 3:00 a.m. which I heard about), my kids, and my grandchildren. He was a true friend and client. He and Maggie stopped in my office every Friday when they came to do their banking & I enjoyed our time together.
Like everyone else in our community, I hold many special memories of times together. I thank him for his dedication, his kind, gentle way with elderly patients, his quick decisive thinking for referrals, and his straightforward common sense attitude. He was one in a million and I thank him for all the years he cared for my family .

My memories of Charles brings smiles to my face. When I was doing the major renovation to their home/office here in Bayfield in 1994 Charles remarked one day that his patients had never had such great heartbeats. “Charles I replied – it’s the nail gun!” . One of a kind I’d say – Ken Johnson

Dear Wallace Family,
I never knew Dr. Wallace outside of what his grand-daughter Julia (my best friend) would tell me and pictures she would share with me, but I do know the positive and influential impact he had on her – whether it be music, travel, loving of life or having a great time. The stories she told me about him sticking it out in the pub, jamming to music or the impact he had on the community (which is obvious by the comments here) clearly indicated how magical of a human he was to so many people.
I am beyond blessed to have Julia in my life and to know that he was such an influence on who she is as a person (which in my perspective is an absolute star – clear that apple doesn’t fall far from the tree).
To the Wallace family and Bayfield / Zurich community, am I so sorry for this tremendous loss. May you all find peace and continue to provide the kindness that Dr. Wallace was so clearly able to share during his time here.

Moira, Deirdre and Andrew,
Charles delivered me and so this is personal. He employed my Mother in the early 1970s who was a widow with a pre-school child & he allowed her to bring that child to work with her. In hindsight, this says a lot about his generosity. I spent the very early years of my life in your home in Zurich with my best friend Foo. I remember everything about that house. Moira showed me how to properly use a knife and fork. :) We all moved to Toronto at different times and I visited your Toronto homes as well. In 1991, we had brunch at a pub on Kings Road in London and that was incredible for me to see Charles and Moira in London.
A few years ago, both Charles and my Mother were at Blue Water Rest Home, but in different parts of the home. My Mom & I ran into him and it was a lovely surprise. He had his stethoscope around his neck and he was looking for patients. Maybe he knew us, I’m not sure, but he still had that twinkle in his eye. He asked me “What number were you?” and I replied, four. Always the Doctor.
His generation is called The Silents. They survived World Wars, they worked hard, kept their heads down and did what had to be done. Zurich was lucky to have him in the community. He was one of a kind and I was lucky to have him in life. Rest in peace Dr. Charles Wallace and my deepest condolences to you all.
Sherri Penn
A life well lived and a man well loved. My sincerest sympathy to the family of Dr. Wallace on his passing. Like so many others, I am grateful to have had him as our family doctor for many years, care that spanned for parts of three generations. I had the pleasure of working with him early in my career and have many fond memories of the wonderful care and kindness he showed consistently to all of his patients & staff. Most of all, I am eternally grateful for Doc for saving my son Scott’s life, when he was just 2 days old, from what would have been a fatal neonatal infection. For this he will forever be my hero. Rest in the sweetest peace Dr. Wallace. You are loved and will never be forgotten 💙

Dear Dr Wallace,
Words cannot express how much you have meant to me over the years…as a child having you as the family doctor to myself, parents, sisters (as you delivered all four of them in Exeter), grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, neighbours and friends. As a teenager we were blessed to have the addition of Maggie. As a young adult and parent you were advisor , teacher and employer. Finally, a dear friend is the best memory of you. As you would say, “Well, carry on then”. We will – all the better for having you in our lives!

What a wonderful life lived , so many memories in this community. He will be missed!
He delivered both my husband and I at the Exeter Hospital in 1970 , and then put stitches in our sons knee 30 years later at the same hospital while helping out in the ER department. While talking to him during this visit he remarked to my husband that he remembered the night he was born in Jan 1970 because he and his Mom were brought in by Ambulance in the middle of a snow storm. The dedication he had for his patients will never be replaced , he was one of a kind.

To Dr Wallace’s family: Moira, Andrew & Deirdre,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of an exceptional gentleman & Physician.
It was an honour to be his patient, as well as his colleague for many years at Blue Water Rest Home.
He was a devoted diagnostician & always available.
All that being said; he cared about everyone whose paths his crossed & he knew how to have fun.
God bless you, dear Dr Charles,
With gratitude & fondness; I remember you with a smile
