It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Cliff, husband, father, grandfather, and brother. James Clifford Philip Waters of St. Marys, formerly of the Granton Line, passed away at St. Marys Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at the age of 78. Born June 27, 1943, Cliff was born and raised in St. Marys. He helped at the family store and later worked summers at the cement plant. He attended Central School and St. Marys Collegiate. After graduating from Waterloo University, he began his teaching career and taught for 30 years at South Huron High School in Exeter in the Geography department. Over the years there, he enjoyed special lifelong friendships with staff and students. Cliff enjoyed the outdoors; he was an avid fly fisherman and tied his own flies. He also enjoyed hunting. Precious time was spent at the cottage on the Bruce Peninsula. Cliff was a fan of the Montreal Canadiens, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Chicago Cubs “Cubbies”, and of course, the London Knights. Over the years, Cliff planted hundreds of trees. He was an environmentalist before his time. He planted them for the pure enjoyment of watching them grow.
His greatest treasure was his family, his beloved wife Mary Ruth (Dykes) Waters, his dear children Pamela and Tom Young, Darren and Christine Waters, and Kelly and Ryan Hewlett. He was a very proud and dearly loved papa of Emily, Matthew, and Jillian Young, Catherine, and Caroline Waters and Lyla, Landon, and Brea Hewlett. Loved by his sister Barbara Osborne, and brother-in-law Peter. Dear brother-in-law of Bill and Susan Dykes. Fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Clifford and Harriet (Walter) Waters, his brother John, and Mary’s parents, Floyd and Mary Dykes.
A private funeral service will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, Lucan on Monday, February 7th at 11 AM with Pastor Paul Vollick officiating. Interment Prospect Hill Cemetery, at a later date.
Though the service is private, the family invites you to join with them from the comfort of your home. Stream the service live or at your convenience by visiting www.facebook.com/haskettfh
In his memory, plant a tree. If you wish to make a memorial donation, please consider St. Marys Healthcare Foundation.

Mary, Pam, Darren, Kelly and families,
From near and far, we are all thinking of you during this difficult time and wish you comfort in the months ahead. Us girls remember well, our childhood stops along the Granton Line (usually on a Saturday night) while on our way home from the farm or St. Marys. Of course, your Dad was usually relaxing in front of the fireplace in his chair and smoking his pipe. The smell of a pipe will forever remind us of Cliff. We know that you will find comfort in all of the great family memories you have together and wonderful pictures. Thank you for sharing the service and your memories with us today.
Cliff will be dearly missed.

Dear Mrs. Waters, Kelly, Pam, Darren and families,
My deepest condolences to each and every one of you during this sad time.
I have many memories of Mr. Waters and will always remember how kind he was to me. One of the memories that I have of Mr. Waters is at Kelly’s birthday parties (our younger years of course) we would always give him birthday spankings because of their shared birthday. He always laughed and tried to run, but couldn’t outrun us girls (haha). But my most fondest memory is knowing that Mr. Waters wanted to see all of us succeed and I am sure he was proud to see that we did. He was a pleasure to talk with and will be deeply missed.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Jackie Morgan
Mr. Waters was a wonderful teacher and friend. He offered his students so much and opened all of our eyes to the world around us. He was thoughtful and quick witted but also kind and caring. He loved his family so very much. I have the fondest memories of him and offer his family my deepest condolences.
Bill and Shirley Bannerman
Our deepest sympathy to Mary, Pam, Darren, Kelly and all the family. Many, many years ago now I was a classmate of Cliff’s at St.Mary’s High school. Cliff was always interested in History and Geography. Bill and I and Cliff and Mary Ruth have kept in contact over the years.. The last few years we’ve enjoyed many chats and special times together. Cliff loved and was proud of each of his kids and grandkids and of course he loved and was thankful for his amazing wife.

Mary So sorry to hear of your loss of Cliff. May you and your family find peace and comfort as you share memories made together.

Sending my love and condolences. High school Geography came to life through Mr. Waters. He genuinely cared about his students and encouraged us to not only learn about the world, but to go out and see it. Mr. Waters rolled in the tv to class and somehow got us to watch the OJ Simpson criminal trial verdict. That moment made a significant impact on me. He will be missed.

So sorry to hear of Cliff’s passing. A great man and a great teacher. Martha and I were both “Grade 9 in 69” and we agree that he was one of our favorites. My home room teacher for a year also. I recall having some great visits with him in the classroom and he always was willing to listen. May the love you all shared and the memories your family have made, grant you a good measure of God’s peace that passeth all understanding.

SHDHS – Mr Walters was my home room teacher for 2 years and my geography teacher for several years…. He is the reason I graduated Geography with Honours….
I did not pursue a career in geography but he is the reason I love geography and I passed that passion on to my daughter.
She is 21 and 4 yr geography major and working towards her Master at Brock University THANK YOU 🙏🏻

I like many others was fortunate enough to attend SHDHS in the mid ’80s. Once enrolled it wasn’t hard to realize we had the greatest teachers in the province all in one building. Mr. Waters obviously was one of them !!! He layed a lasting impression on all students he taught (including myself). I also remember having Mary as a substitute teacher at Exeter Public School….. Two passionate educator’s. That’s why when people ask I’m proud to say I graduated with honours from SHDHS !!! Rest in peace my friend !!!

Rest in Peace Mr. Waters
This is a teacher that pushed me to do my homework (you don’t get caught with unfinished homework in his class) he taught me more about life’s lessons than Geography, but above all, would ALWAYS say hi in the classroom, the hallways, and every single morning with a locker outside his classroom- we became buddies. He could put a smile on my face with his sense of humour, like no other. He was one of the best!
Wonderful tribute by Dave McLeod on the site.
Hollywood says Rest in Peace Mr. Waters- I think of you often. This is Hollywood requesting a fly by sir. Rest easy my friend.

I am so very sorry for your loss. You must know thought that Cliff was a really well respected teacher at SHDHS and stood out as one of my favourites. My family hunted deer on the Bruce Peninsula, so we had much to talk about outside of the geography curriculum. I will always remember the year he decided to allow each student taking the geography exam to bring with them, a piece of paper of a very specific size, with whatever notes they wanted to write on it into the room. He called this “cheat sheet” your “Linus’ Blanket”. We all furiously wrote every possible fact and piece of info we could think of on that paper. Scribing by hand in as small of writing we could manage. As it turned out, the exam questions caused you to actually apply that knowledge instead of simply regurgitating it for marks. What a clever way to get each student to review their entire term, parse it down into custom understandable notes, write these notes down in their own personal format, and use that knowledge to answer exam questions…absolute brilliance. All the time leaving us thinking we got to cheat on the exam. Cliff was a teacher on a different level and I am glad I knew him.
Thank you Sir.

Mr Water’s lessons were always well researched, well presented, well done……He could command a class and capture his audience…….And fair, way beyond a fault…….He caused in us a deeper knowedge of planet Earth and appreciation for God, it’s creator. Cliff gave good value to his students, administration and employer in exchange for his talent and dedication……..Oh yes! Mr Waters was here….he made a difference !

I am saddened to hear of Mr. Waters passing. Like so many others, I had the pleasure of being his student at SHDHS.
The most important lessons he taught me weren’t curriculum-based. He taught me to have gumption…. how to be a strong person with your own validated opinions and not to be afraid to voice them. I enjoyed the comraderie we had, he was one of a kind and I never forgot him or the lessons.
My sincere condolences at this time of loss.

So sorry to hear this and my condolences to all the Waters family. I had the pleasure of having Cliff as a teacher many years ago at South Huron; he was an excellent and entertaining teacher and had a very unique personality-serious enough to control the classroom but with a fabulous sense of humour which I think endeared him to many students, myself among them.

Dear Mary, Pamela, Darren, and Kelly, and Cliff’s entire family.
I am so sorry to hear of Cliff’s passing. I have many happy memories of the eight years we worked together in the Geography Department at SHDHS – Cliff in Room103 and me in Room105, with our little hole-in-the wall offices just down the hallway. We did a fair bit of team teaching, especially when we both had the Grade 9s, which meant that we took groups of (as Cliff liked to call them) “the kiddies” on a number of field trips – up to Goderich, down to London, and on a couple of occasions as far afield as Toronto. I remember introducing Cliff to bratwurst, sauerkraut, and pickles on a bun at the Covent Garden Market in London; and the time we went for “real” Chinese food in the Dundas St. Chinatown in Toronto, which was an interesting experience since the food was so different than what we normally encounter. When some of the students were hesitant, Cliff encouraged them try it, and he bravely ate the mystery food and attempted to demonstrate the use of chopsticks with mixed results.
I remember Cliff from many staff functions – being “Wilson” from Home Improvement in the staff Christmas Skit, and playing bocce at the year end party in his bare feet – with his pant legs rolled up. (And I remember Cliff and Mary hosting the year end party at your home on Granton Line). Most of all I remember how proud Cliff was of Pamela, Darren, and Kelly, he loved to talk about his kids. And I know how much he appreciated the love and support of Mary. After his car accident I visited a number of times as Cliff wanted to keep up with what was going on with his students as he recuperated – and he said more than a few times how much her help made it possible.
I hope that happy memories, and the love of family and friends will help support you during this difficult time. Cliff was a fine man, he will be missed.
